Guided tours of the Pardee Home are our most important offering to the
public. Because all of our furnishings and collections are original and
authentic, without exception, we offer a remarkable look at the life of
the Pardee family within these walls from 1869 through 1981. We also see
almost the entire house during a guided tour. On the ground floor we
visit the three formal front parlors (main, candlestick, and music),
the informal back parlor, and dining room. On the second floor we visit
the three original bedrooms, several closets containing period clothing, the billiard room, the curio room, and the
hallway lined with cabinets of Mrs. Pardee's antiquities. We also allow
our visitors the rare privilege of visiting our cupola, or tower, to
admire the views from atop the Pardee Home.
Finally, we will see the gardens and our historic, all-redwood carriage house. The carriage house is a remarkable survivor in downtown Oakland once threatened with demolition to make way for an on-ramp to Interstate 980, but still intact with horse stalls, tack room, bins, and a rickety stairway to the hayloft area. The Pardee Home has been described as the finest intact Italianate villa estate remaining in Northern California, and our guided tours offer a rare opportunity to see almost all of it!
GUIDED TOURS: The museum is available for guided tours year-round. Regular tours are given every Wednesday and the second Saturday of each month at 10:30 am and on the Second Sunday of each month at 2:00 pm. Reservations are recommended but not required. Group tours may be arranged Tuesday through Sunday anytime between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. Tours are approximately one hour. If possible, please make reservations for group tours at least a week in advance. Cost is $5.00 per person. PRIVATE TOURS AND TEAS: Take a private tour followed by tea in the grandly appointed Pardee family dining room (available for 4 to 12 persons). Tour with light tea is $12.00 while tour with high tea is $25.00 per person. A High Tea without a tour is $20.00 per person. SPECIAL EVENTS: Consider high tea in this historical home with original furnishings for special celebrations: mother-daughter-grandparents, showers, out of town visitors, birthdays, special friends, or meetings - to name just a few. Tea and your special event may also be held in the surrounding gardens. Call the museum office at (510) 444-2187 or email info@pardeehome.org to request a reservation, and we will confirm your request as soon as possible. If you reach the answering machine, please be sure to speak clearly and leave your name, phone number. Admission is $5 per person, free to children twelve and younger and to museum members. The museum has received a $30,000 grant from the State Office of Historic Preservation to achieve handicapped accessibility. Because of this we have an ADA accessible lift up to the ground floor as well as an ADA accessible restroom on this floor. The stairway to the second floor has twenty-two steps and up to the cupola there are twenty-three more. We have photos and text on all the second-floor rooms for those who do not wish to climb the steps. · Tours of the Pardee Home can be combined with tours of such nearby attractions as Preservation Park or Old Oakland, offered through the city's Oakland Tours program (Downtown Oakland Walking Tours), to make for a delightful full-day journey through Oakland history.
